Gina and Dylan met during their freshman year at Bowdoin College (on the dance floor, of course). A year later, Dylan asked Gina on a date - they went to Flatbread Company in Portland, ME, where they enjoyed pizza by the water, discussed time and space, and rocked out to Sweet Child O' Mine on the drive back to campus. It was clear there was something special between them. They spent their first year together sharing music, talents, and stories (sometimes staying up until 4am to do so). Laughing until they cried became the norm, and before long they started getting to know each other’s hometowns and families. One particularly vivid memory is from Steamboat Springs, CO (Dylan’s hometown) where their car got stuck in the mud… in the middle of nowhere… with no cell service… during a hail storm. It was during that chaos when they first exchanged “I Love You's”. Another unforgettable memory is from Phoenix, AZ (Gina’s hometown) where Dylan wrote and performed a 10-minute play called “Where In The World is Gina Fickera?”. The answer was "Italy", and the play ended with surprise plane tickets to what would be their first of many trips abroad together! Fast-forward to 2022, Gina and Dylan are living together in Brooklyn (though they are still without a dog), and working in Manhattan - Gina as a clinical research associate at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Dylan as a software engineer at Bloomberg. You can still find them enjoying pizza, sharing music, making each other laugh, and going on new adventures. One of their latest adventures was in London, where they celebrated their 6th anniversary. One evening, Dylan took Gina to see her favorite ballerina perform in the Royal Ballet's "Swan Lake". Afterwards, he led her onto the Golden Jubilee Bridge overlooking the River Thames, illuminated by the London Eye and Westminster Palace, and got down on one knee. Shortly after, they left the bridge engaged and excited to start a new chapter!
We enjoy watching movies, attending concerts, and traveling.
Our first movie was Interstellar, one of Dylan's favorite sci-fi films, which was very fitting after lots of talk about time and space on the first date. As of December 2022, we've watched ~530 movies (and that doesn't include repeats)!
Cage the Elephant, The Strokes, and Guns N' Roses were all pretty memorable. But Flogging Molly easily takes the cake! Picture being up on the rooftop at Pier 17 in South Street Seaport, moshing to upbeat Celtic Punk music, and dancing together in the pouring rain with beer in hand.
We miss Italy and are going back to explore the Amalfi Coast and Sicily! Any recommendations?
To continue building a life we're excited about. In the near future, that looks like moving out West to be closer to family (and maybe starting one of our own)!
